Ice on Your AC? Don’t Panic (But Don’t Ignore It Either)

Just discovered your air conditioning system looks like a frozen margarita machine? Yeah, that’s not normal, and it’s definitely not helping cool your house.

I get calls about frozen coils almost daily during North Texas summers. Usually goes something like this: “My AC was working fine yesterday, now there’s ice everywhere and it’s blowing warm air.”

Here’s the thing - a frozen coil is almost never the real problem. It’s a symptom. Something upstream caused that ice to form, and we need to fix THAT, not just melt the ice.

What You Can (and Should) Do Right Now

First - TURN OFF YOUR SYSTEM. I don’t care how hot it is outside. Running a frozen system makes everything worse and more expensive to fix.

Check your filter. I’m not kidding - pull it out right now. If it looks like a gray carpet, there’s your problem. A clogged filter is the number one cause of frozen coils I see. Replace it and let the ice melt completely before trying again.

Look around for obvious problems. Are vents closed throughout the house? Is there ice on the refrigerant lines outside? Take pictures with your phone - they’ll help me diagnose the problem when you call.

Check for error codes on your thermostat or air handler. Write them down. These codes are like your system talking to me, and I want to hear what it’s saying.

Likely causes

Airflow restrictions including dirty filters, blocked ducts, or dirty coils represent the most common cause of frozen evaporator coils and typically need professional duct repair to restore proper system operation. Electrical parts such as failed capacitors, contactors, or sensors require AC repair diagnostics to identify and replace the specific components causing the freeze-up condition. Charge or metering issues including low refrigerant often cause freeze-ups by reducing system pressure and temperature below the freezing point of condensate water. Safe checks you can do

Replace the air filter immediately and open any closed vents to restore proper airflow throughout your system. Clear all debris around the outdoor unit including leaves, grass clippings, and other obstructions that could restrict airflow. Gently rinse the outdoor coil with water if it appears dusty or dirty, being careful to spray from inside-out to avoid pushing debris deeper into the coil. Photograph any error codes displayed on your thermostat or system controls to share with the technician, as these codes provide valuable diagnostic information.

Smell something burning? Stop everything and call immediately. Burning smells plus frozen coils usually means electrical problems, and that’s dangerous.

Water pooling near electrical components? Water and electricity don’t play nice. Call a professional before someone gets hurt.
